Sodium intake of special population groups within the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span study

Clymer J, Cotugna N, Fanelli-Kuczmarski M, Hotchkiss L, Mason MA, Zonderman AB, Evans MK. Sodium intake of special population groups within the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span study. Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; 2012; Philadelphia, PA. Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. 2012;112:in press.

Introduction: Hypertension (HTN) strikes 33.6% of Americans contributing to half of all cardiovascular disease leading to heart disease and strokes often resulting in disability and death. The CDC recommends limiting sodium to 1500 mg daily for three at risk population groups - hypertensives, African Americans, and those 40 years and older, which comprises 70% of the American population. Americans typically consume 3400 mg sodium daily. The purpose of this study was to analyze the sodium intake of participants of the HANDLS study who were in the three CDC identified categories. Additionally, major dietary sources of sodium for each group were determined, dietary intakes were correlated with the sodium recommendations, and relationships between sodium intake and antihypertensive medications were evaluated. Methods: The HANDLS longitudinal cohort consists of 3,721 socioeconomically diverse African American and white participants, aged 30-64 years, from Baltimore. Utilizing HANDLS study baseline data, sodium intake from two 24-hour recalls was analyzed. Variables analyzed included age, race, HTN status identified by blood pressure measurements and/or antihypertensive prescription, and sodium calculated from United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference. Expected Outcomes: Determination of sodium intake of the HANDLS population, identification of sources of sodium, comparison of intakes to dietary recommendations, relationship of sodium consumption with number of antihypertensive medication. Discussion: The CDC and 2010 Dietary Guideline recommendations for sodium intake, though evidence based, may be unrealistic for the special populations who make up 70% of Americans as well as the population at large.
